“How should I live my life this year?” was an article in the Reader’s Digest. The author told his friends, “I’m 41 years old this year. I’m a lawyer and a scholar of economics. I’m also a script writer. What should I aim for next?” A friend half jokingly said to him, “To live till 42!” He acknowledged the answer. He had felt unwell recently. He had seen the doctor recently who told him, “I think you shouldn’t exert yourself and work as if your life depends on it. Aim to survive to the next year.” He didn’t expect his friend to say the same thing.

In previous sermons, warfare in the realm or spirits has been discussed. In the first war, Satan lost. Michael and his angels defeated him and his hosts, and Satan was cast down. But that’s not the end! When he’s cast down, he wages the next war, and the enemy he’s fighting is you.

One important tradition Chinese keep is the reunion dinner. The speaker recalls that when he was a child, he enjoyed and looked forward to reunion dinners because the dishes would miraculously double, he could wear his new pyjamas, receive angpaos from the adults, and play with sparkles at night. On the first day of new year, many of his cousins would gather at his grandparents’ house. They would catch butterflies, pretend to be superheroes and dress up like one. All in all, reunion is a time the whole family gathers together; where we recount the blessings we have as a family, seated at the same table. This is even more so when we think about the CoronaVirus out there. There’re people who can’t go back to China because of this. The speaker’s colleague decided not to go back because her hometown is just beside Wuhan. This would be her first time missing reunion dinner. For us who have been able to gather for reunion dinner, it is truly God’s blessing. We share a meal together, talk about the olden times, and create memories of the future.
